A market stall idea that became half a million pairs of socks
Back in 2015, our founder Sammy spotted an empty stall at Fremantle Markets — and a gap nobody else had noticed. Among all the local honey, handmade timber and handcrafted jewellery, there were almost no socks. So naturally, that's what she chose.
The kind of idea that sounds a bit odd at first
Australia isn't exactly known for its harsh winters. Socks weren't an obvious choice. But Sammy noticed something spending time at the markets: people weren't just buying practical things. They were looking for something to remember the place by — and a good pair of socks, it turns out, actually gets worn.
"Unlike a fridge magnet or a keyring, a good pair of socks becomes part of someone's routine."
That simple observation is still the idea the whole brand is built on. Rather than creating another generic souvenir, the goal was to design socks people would genuinely enjoy wearing — while celebrating the colours, wildlife and creativity that make Australia unique.
Why bamboo? Honestly, once you try it you get it
Finding the right material took some searching. Australia's long summers and active lifestyle mean you need socks that actually breathe. Bamboo kept coming up — and the first time customers tried them, the reaction was usually the same: "These feel way softer than I expected."
Bamboo has been at the heart of every Red Fox Sox design since. It's not a marketing point — it's just what makes people come back.
How the designs came together
In 2017, Sammy started developing original designs — not tourist-shop novelty stuff, but socks people would actually want to wear. Koalas and kangaroos, yes, but with modern colour and real craft behind them. It took a few years of sketches, samples and supplier conversations to get right.
Not just socks that look Australian. Socks people reach for on a Tuesday morning because they love how they feel — and happen to look great too.
Since then, we've worked with Australian artists whose distinctive styles have kept the collection feeling made by people who genuinely love this place.
Ten years of doing things the slow, right way
Growth came steadily, not overnight. What began as a single stall gradually expanded into retailers, gift shops, museums and boutiques across Australia and New Zealand.
Still the same three things, ten years on
Although the company has grown significantly since 2015, the original vision remains remarkably simple.
"The heart of Red Fox Sox remains exactly where it started — in Fremantle, a place known for creativity, individuality, and a willingness to do things differently."
